Chester Boone’s Horticultural Insecticides are formulated from organic farm-grown vegetable oils and vegetable glycerin and saponified with potassium hydroxide. Soft-bodied insects such as aphids, mealybugs, thrips, and mites, along with egg masses and larvae are most susceptible.

Oils are chosen that have a high percentage of lauric acid with makes a hard lather for the initial knockdown. Survivors don’t last long, due to the oleic acid surfactant and the ricin oleic acid penetrant.

Q. We have a licensed cannabis farm, and we grow indoors under lights. Our farm depends on a high-value, high-quality harvest, rich in terpenes, colors, and actives. Traditional agricultural pest control oils and chemicals smother terpenes and reduce value. We need to have a better answer. How can Chester Boone’s help?

A. Chester Boone’s removes pests and contaminants, improves hygiene, and raises crop value. Spray Chester Boone’s All Purpose regularly from cutting or seedling through the vegetative stage and even up to the day of harvest if desired. Make sure ventilation and fans are sufficient to dry plants post-spray. Fifteen to twenty minutes wet is ideal.

Q. How can we eliminate spider mites and russet-hemp mites from our greenhouse crop?

A. Spider mites generally live on the undersides of leaves where they puncture plant cells to feed. Hemp-russet mites prefer crotches. To eliminate spider or russet mites, spray Chester Boone’s PURE, concentrating on spraying under leaves, the vertical stem, the branch crotches, and where the petiole (leaf stem) meets the branch. Repeat spray Chester Boone’s PURE three days later, wait three days, and then follow up three times a week with Chester Boone’s All Purpose to maintain hygiene. Chester Boone’s All Purpose will prevent pestilential events if used regularly as directed.  

Q. How can we eliminate fungus gnats?

A. Fungus gnats may readily be prevented by adding Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis larvicide (BTI) to the irrigation water. BTI will interrupt their life cycle. Follow label directions. Adult fungus gnats look very similar to adult root aphids, and both will startle into flight if disturbed. Any adult flyers of either species will be controlled by contact with Chester Boone’s spray.

Q. What can we do about aphids and thrips?

A. Aphids and thrips can be controlled with Chester Boone’s All Purpose if used regularly. Greenhouse thrips hatchlings congregate openly on the undersides of lower leaves. Spray under and over lower leaves, stem, and crotches.

Q. What can we do about root aphids?

A.  Adult root aphids lay eggs on lower foliage and branches. Like all aphids, adult female root aphids give birth to live juvenile pregnant aphids in addition to laying eggs. Their population can explode rapidly.

Spray Chester Boone’s PURE, tank mixed with the larvicide Beauveria bassiana, paying close attention to under leaves, in crotches, and main stem. There is no need to flood it, just wet it completely and repeat every three to five days. This will cut the reproductive egg and hatch cycle. Chester Boone’s and Beauveria bassiana are spray compatible. Follow label directions.

It is possible to soak or drench potting media using Chester Boone’s to wet-hiding root aphids, however, timing and drainage is critical. Potting media that stay too wet for too long with any pesticide may not be well tolerated by plants already stressed by insect feeding. Another good reason to use well-drained sterile media such as Riococo, GrowCoir, or RedRock Stonewool grow blocks.
